Why Your Baby Wakes Up at Night Even After Sleeping Well
4 min read
Your baby was sleeping beautifully for weeks and then suddenly the nighttime wake ups returned. It feels like a step backward but it is actually a normal part of how infant sleep develops.
Night Waking Is Built Into Baby Sleep
A full sleep cycle for an infant lasts only about 50 to 60 minutes compared to 90 minutes for a grown up. At the end of each cycle your baby briefly surfaces into a lighter state of sleep. Most of the time they drift back under without a sound.
The First Six Months Are the Most Dynamic
By three months about half of babies are sleeping five or more hours at a stretch. By five months more than half are sleeping from roughly 10 PM to 6 AM. But these milestones do not arrive in a straight line.
Common Reasons for Sudden Wake Ups
Growth spurts and developmental leaps can temporarily disrupt sleep. Teething discomfort and minor illnesses like colds are also frequent culprits. Hunger plays a role too especially during growth spurts.
Sleep Associations Matter
One of the most common reasons babies wake and cry at night is that they need the same conditions that were present when they fell asleep. This is called sleep onset association and it is the single most treatable cause of frequent night waking.
When to Talk to Your Pediatrician
If your baby seems to be in pain during wake ups or if night waking is getting worse rather than better after six months it is worth bringing up at your next visit.
The Big Picture
Sleep development is not a switch that flips once and stays on. It is a gradual process with plenty of bumps along the way. Be patient with the process and with yourself.
